Buying Organic

Since we just talked about being "green", it might be worth mentioning buying organic. Organic products can cost up to 50% more then their conterparts so here are a few simple tips on when to splurge:

Fruits
* if its an item with a thick peel that is removed and not consumed, buy regular
(ex. oranges, bananas, pineapples...)
* buy organic berries, cherries, apples, peaches, plums, pears, tomatoes etc.
Vegetables
* skip organic for basics like corn on cob, potatoes & onions
* buy organic for leafy vegetables, carrots, broccoil, peppers, celery.
Meats & Milk
* if beef, poultry, pork & dairy products free of growth hormones and
antibiotics are a priority, organic is worth it but double check the packaging label.
* seafood, no need to purchase organic

Always look for the "USDA Organic seal" and wash (scrub is possible) produce for a minimum of twenty seconds under very hot water to remove any residue. Always remove outer leaves and dispose. ---Judy
