I'm Jonzing....by Jenni

Jenni sent this along for all of us to mull over:

1. How do you handle "keeping up with the Jones'?" How about our kids feeling as if they have to keep up with the other kids they associate with?

2.Kids say the darnedest things! For instance, tonight during the blessing over dinner, while reciting God is great, my daughter said, "let Him thank us for our food". Isn't that hilarious!

Just some thoughts! Thanks Ladies!!!!!

Thanks Jenni -- I know I have some darnedest things kids say to add; see ya all in the comments!

Good idea, Jenni. We should have a "Kids' Cute Comments" running post, because they do say some adorable things. When my daughter was 2/3 yrs. old, she used to say, "But I did it on purpose" instead of "by accident" and she used to say, "My imagination told me to do it." Cute!

As far as keeping up with the Joneses, it can be tough, especially when your kids go to a school where there is a lot of money. This morning my son said his friend is so rich that "even his money has money." I just tell them the standard lines that money doesn't buy happiness, that we are much more fortunate than most people in the world, and that we need to be grateful for our blessings. I also try to model for them simplicity... not getting more and more stuff. I'm also honest with them in telling them that rampant materialism is a problem in our society (even connecting it to environmental issues of overconsumption and waste of our resources). But I'm sure it's still just a lot of talk to them. It's hard... they see their friends with all these things and they can't help but want them too. I do think that the less we as parents emphasize material things, the less they probably will too. Tracy

RE: Jones'
Good one Jenni !!! This is how we handle it. I try to teach my girls the importance of being grateful. Grateful for the things we do have and grateful for our friends that share their things with us. Not always easy but I'm not one to play the "competition game". I also try to explain that mom and dad work very hard to provide for them and the things we do have. For now, that seems to be working : )

This is one of my favorite kid-funny things. When my girlfriend's daugther would misbehave, my friend would tell her daughter that the behavior was "unacceptable". One day, her daugther got frustrated and turned to my friend and said: "Mom, this is not a vegetable!". I guess they hear what they know sometimes!

I knew I was going to Dunkin Donuts too many times when my daughter (who I always called my "little munchkin") asked when she would be my donut!

Thank goodness for Starbucks!

When the school year first began, I was talking with my daughter about school while she(5), my son (3) and I ate lunch. The subject turned to the "Student of the Month". I was about to segue into why good behaviour is important in school and so I asked her "do you ever want to be student of the month?" My son quickly replied, "Hey, I want to be stupid in a month!" After I finished laughing I thought to myself, as it turns out son, you might not have to wait that long.

OK...here's my funny.
When my daughter was 4 she had a stomach bug and vomitted : ) She looked at me and said, I "vominosted"...do I have to go to the "hostable". It was the saddest little question and I had to hold back my giggles!!

My niece never ceases to slay me with her one-liners...
I picked her up from preschool, and was getting on the interstate to go pick up my daughter from gradeschool. Tasia asked me if she could put down the window, to which I answered, "No, Sweetie,I leave the windows up while we're on the highway."
Tasia replied, "Oh, O.K.," and then looked around and asked, "but when will we be on the low way?"
